Molly Axtmann

Molly Axtmann began playing the piano and composing at age six. Ms. Axtmann has won awards for her vocal, piano solo, string and orchestral music. Her compositions have been performed nationwide, in Europe and Japan.

Ms. Axtmann attended The Juilliard School, graduated magna cum laude with honors in music from Barnard College of Columbia University (1972), and holds a Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music (1977).

Ms. Axtmann served on the faculties of the Mannes College of Music in New York City, The San Francisco Conservatory and at the Community Music School of San Francisco where she founded a scholarship program for inner city children. She produces Young Composers Concerts (2000-present), showcasing remarkable young composer-performers ages 9-15.

In September 2002 Ms. Axtmann released her CD A Year of Days, a collection of original piano solos. She creates visual scores for improvisation with photographer John Pearson performed on Visual Concerts at Strings in Oakland. Since 2003 Molly has been a regular accompanist for the Niles Silent Film Museum. In 2007 Molly received a Community Partners grant from the American Composers Forum for her score and performance of the silent classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Molly teaches composition, improvisation, theory and piano at her private studio in Oakland and is on the faculty of the John Adams Young Composers Program at Crowden Center for Music in the Community.
