Beth Kim grew up in the heat and fog of the Central Valley, playing a lot of tennis, swimming, skiing, and practicing violin. She attended UC Berkeley as an undergraduate, majoring in English Literature and then continuing at Cal to receive her teaching credential. Before embarking on her formal teaching career, Beth spent an adventurous year traveling and teaching young Ecuadorian children English in a small Andean town called Riobamba.
After her Ecuadorian sojourn, Beth returned to teach English as a Second Language in Albany Unified and then spent several years as a sixth-grade core teacher at King Middle School in Berkeley. At King, Beth was very active in the Edible Schoolyard project where she developed a love of gardening and communal cooking. Beth was also the lead technology teacher at King with the Teacher Led Technology Challenge in Berkeley Unified and had the opportunity to experiment with many exciting project-based, collaborative educational software programs. Her interest in media literacy, the digital divide and constructivism led her to pursue a Master's degree in Educational Technology at the University of San Francisco.
Beth has two young children, Ian, 6, and Hannah, 3, and as an extreme generalist enjoys a wide variety of active hobbies and interest ranging from cycling to knitting. She and her husband Ben live in the Montclair District of Oakland where they are remodeling their home themselves slowly and laboriously, inside and out, every room at the same time.
