Greg Paxton
B.A., Flagler College
M.A., University of Florida
For sixteen years, Greg worked as a musician, singer/songwriter, composer, and creative arts director in various Episcopal churches. His contributions include worship music, choral works, original musical productions, music for dance, and various recordings.
Eventually, Greg's passion for social issues led him toward a different career path, where, as part of his undergraduate studies, he began his travels in Central America. While living in Guatemala, Greg witnessed first-hand the impact of civil war. Greg's undergraduate work focused on the plight of indigenous (Mayan) refugees, as well as the social changes brought by emerging religious movements in the area. For one incredible summer, Greg had the opportunity to fuse study with involvement as a school teacher in a rural area of Northern Honduras.
During graduate school, Greg focused on a detailed examination of mainstream religious denominations, deconstructing both policy and ideology that affected gay and lesbian lives. Desiring to temper that research with theological studies, Greg, along with his partner Matthew, moved to California in 1998, where he completed the first year of an M. Div., at the Graduate Theological Union. At the end of that year, however, Greg began to realize a different kind of vocation, and shortly thereafter began his full-time career as an educator.
From 2000-2007, Greg was the beloved 7th & 8th grade Humanities instructor at Archway School, where he taught history, english, and media arts. For Greg, teaching has been the perfect synthesis of education with life-experience, allowing him to impart to students the relevance and importance of history in their world.
