Lisa Grodin , a Berkeley native, was appointed Artistic Music Director of The Crowden School in 2004. She first began teaching at the school in 1985 at founder Anne Crowden's invitation. From her violinistic beginnings as a student of Anne Crowden at the age of eleven, Ms. Grodin caught "the performance bug" and went on to earn a double degree in History and Violin Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. She continued her studies as a fellowship student at The Eastman School Of Music, where she earned her Master of Music degree in Violin Performance and Literature.
Ms. Grodin has been a member of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for two decades and frequently appears as a Principal Player on violin or viola. She also performs with many other nationally based early music ensembles, including American Bach Soloists, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Smithsonian Chamber Players, and the Aulos Ensemble. Her musical travels as a chamber musician and orchestral performer have taken her abroad with groups such as Les Arts Florissants, (France), Capella Savaria (Hungary), La Cetra (Italy), and Capella Cartusianum (Germany). She has appeared locally with Midsummer Mozart, San Jose Symphony, the Del Sol String Quartet, San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and Berkeley Symphony, and has enjoyed recording film scores at Skywalker Ranch. She has also played in over forty commercial recordings on Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, Koch, Meridian, and Hungaraton labels. Ms. Grodin strives to kindle her students' interest in the process of preparing and performing music so they can catch "the performance bug" too.
