Susan Richards

B.S. Cal State University East Bay (Biology)

Susan Richards was born in San Francisco to musical parents; her father was a professional jazz piano player and her mother, also a pianist, regularly put Susan and her sisters to sleep by playing Chopin's Nocturnes . Fascinated by the entire biological world, Susan has been especially drawn to the study of neurobiology and cellular chemistry. A serious reader and endlessly curious and engaged about the nature of schools, she is excited about working with the students at Crowden.

Susan has made a career of working in independent schools. Originally a high school teacher, Susan moved to middle school, believing that it is a particularly important age in developing the habits and affection for math and science. She taught Science and Math at the School of the Madeleine for nine years, where she also advised 8 th graders and taught puberty health education classes. Learning how students learn has been a lifelong passion and there is not an aspect of academic life that Susan won't discuss with students, parents or passers-by-so be forewarned.

Susan lives in Berkeley with her husband David, her two teenage children, three big cats, and a trio of disturbingly large goldfish. Music is still a part of her home-her husband plays saxophone in a local band, her daughter is a fire dancer, and her high school age son is a drummer. She loves all types of music and art, and looks forward to working in a school that celebrates that.
