Biography

Chelsea was introduced to Crowden through her son Otis’s family: grandmother Carla Picchi and uncles Anton Patzner, a Crowden alum, and Lewis Patzner, a longtime teacher in Crowden’s community programs and summer camps. Their shared enthusiasm for the school’s music and academics made Otis’s fit obvious. A self-taught musician since childhood (piano, guitar, saxophone, bassoon, jazz piano, musical theater), Chelsea is now a singer-songwriter in the folk and Americana tradition, performing around the Bay Area with two full-length albums released in 2017 and 2025. She is also cofounder of a creative arts nonprofit built around healing through creative expression, born out of a 2012 San Francisco show series on grief and mortality called “You’re Going to Die.” Since incorporating as a nonprofit in 2016, the organization has built programs in California and Ohio prisons, including San Quentin, a hospice musician partnership, work with cancer patients through UCSF’s Art for Recovery, and support for communities of the wrongfully convicted, work she sees as a direct extension of what she hopes Otis will find at Crowden: music as a tool for connection, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
