Head of School for A Day

Tuesday May 6, 2025 saw a unique and fun, peaceful transition of power as 4th grader Amelia assumed the role of Head of School (for a day). In preparation for the day Amelia had multiple planning meetings with Head of School (all other days), Dan Meyers and her Executive Assistant for a day, Kennia Hernandez. Decisions were made, executive orders were generated, and fun was had by all.

The day started early with a 7am pickup so that Amelia (with Dan) could pick up donuts as a way to thank all the faculty and staff—it was Teacher Appreciation Week, after all. With a sweet breakfast in hand the Heads headed to campus to greet students and faculty as they arrived. While outside Amelia was confronted with her first day-of decision as a faculty member sought permission to clear information from another class from a whiteboard. Amelia was up to the task!

As the day unfolded Amelia encountered other situations requiring the attention of the Head of School. The lunch hour was busy! Amelia hosted a burrito party for the 3rd and 4th graders and provided a sweet dessert treat for the entire school community. Afterwards she met with students and gathered concerns from students about the timeliness of the field opening for play—many notes were taken to ensure everyone felt heard.

Once back in the office following lunch Amelia signed several donor letters and approved a time off request. Not expecting to officially sign documents she spent several minutes refining her official signature to ensure all forms were on the up and up. One of her last official duties for the day had her spending time with Crowden’s Board Chair, Ann Eastman, for a fruitful conversation about the board and Amelia’s thoughts about Crowden’s future.

By the time the day was done Amelia reflected that being Head of School (even just for a day) was a hard job!
