Course Description

Beth Vandervennet, Cello Faculty

The cello may be the instrument that sounds most like a human voice — rich and low, capable of a warmth that few instruments can match. In this small-group class, complete beginners learn how to sit with the instrument, hold the bow, and produce a full, resonant tone from the very first lessons. Posture and technique are built carefully from the start, because the cello rewards good habits and makes bad ones hard to hide. From there, students move into note reading, rhythm, and their first music pieces that actually sounds like music.

Important note: Students are required to bring their own cello to class. Cellos come in fractional sizes, so families should ensure their child is properly fitted before the session begins. We’re happy to offer guidance.
