Creativity in Miniature

Aug 20, 2024

Students in our summer John Adams Young Composers Program Workshop spent two weeks composing suites of miniatures this July. These young musicians, aged 9 through 14, could choose to compose for either violin and piano, or voice and piano. Students learned to compose a song and write for voice (with Crowden alum Vanessa Langer, ’03), compose duos for violin and piano, and even how to navigate the creative process itself, by creating something in small groups and individually within a single day. Daily workshops with their fellow composers and the guest artists performing their compositions, and private lessons round out the immersive workshop, which like all of our Young Composers program culminates in a public performance by professional musicians.

Three students sit at the piano together, working on a composition. One looks down at the keyboard in concentration, the other two smile looking up at the score.
