The Value of Learning to Sing

Aug 20, 2024

As the summer sun streamed through Crowden’s Hoefer Auditorium windows, a diverse group of ten individuals gathered. An investment banker in her late 20s, a prominent lawyer, a silver-haired gentleman–one person had even traveled all the way from Nevada to be there. They were about to embark on a journey that would challenge more than just their vocal abilities. In four short days, these strangers–separated by age, profession, and geography but united in their love of singing–would create unforgettable memories together.

This summer, we proudly launched an Adult Intensive Vocal Workshop. Led by Crowden alum Vanessa Langer (’93), our inaugural group of vocalists explored the depths of their potential, pushed their limits, and supported one another in a collective journey of self-discovery and artistic expression. “Everyone was united by a serious commitment to music-making and self-development,” our alumna faculty member shared. “I learned as much from my students as they did from me.”

Vanessa’s vision for the workshop was deeply shaped by her experiences under [our founder] Anne Crowden’s guidance. “Anne took each of us seriously without applying pressure, cultivating a unique environment where students did extraordinary things. We were unaware that we couldn’t, so we did. I hoped to infuse this new program with that legacy,” Vanessa explained. “I assigned beautiful but sometimes complex vocal chamber repertoire, allowing participants to challenge themselves and grow.” One student chimed in, “she made me believe I could master difficult pieces, and I did!”

“While Crowden’s music program has always emphasized string instruments, Anne made sure there was a choir so that string players could experience what it truly meant to ‘sing’ with their instruments,” Vanessa observed. “As a music educator and vocalist, I’m thrilled to carry forward this important part of her legacy.”

At the cumulative recital, as the last chord faded away, one singer captured the sentiment perfectly: “This workshop was the best gift I could have given myself.” What had begun as tentative introductions just four days ago had blossomed into a new community. The true magic of music wasn’t just in the notes sung, but in the bonds forged and the spirits uplifted.
