Refill Not Landfill

From Karen Ginsberg

Last year our seventh grade science class was having a discussion about plastics in the ocean when Dyson asked what seemed to be a ‘simple’ question. Why don’t people refill/reuse water bottles and why don’t  we ( at Crowden) have a way for the community to refill/reuse water bottles to reduce plastic waste in our environment? That was the beginning of a deep dive into emails, phone calls, and meetings until I found a company that would donate one to the school, Elkay. It arrived at Crowden with one ‘simple’ task—to be installed. This is where Rey and Jorge came to our rescue. This was, again, a deep dive but of a different sort. It was literally into an old building’s underbelly, wiring, plumbing, and placement. Last week we officially opened our water bottle refilling station and to show profound appreciation for both the idea (Dyson) and installation (Reynaldo Rodgriguez and Jorge Mendoza) a plaque was placed above the water bottle refilling station. Never let an idea go unexplored and always remember ‘simple’ is anything but…

Thank you Rey, Jorge, and Dyson!
